Bear Sighting!

Posted on August 16, 2010 at 11:51 PM

The highlight of my day was seeing a bear in my backyard this afternoon!  While this might've really freaked me out a few years ago, I consider it a special treat today (for a split second, I even considered following it when it started moving out of my sight)!

Some of my neighbors have spotted them fairly often in Skylake...it seems some people just have the knack for seeing them (or maybe they're just more observant)!  One of my friends saw a momma bear with 3 cubs 2 years ago.  The cubs were still very small...I'm sure that was quite a sight!  My parents claim a bear "stole" the chainsaw they were storing under their deck.  After hearing the bear make a racket and seeing it run into the woods, they found the chainsaw on the edge of their lot with claw marks in the plastic case it was in.  I'm not one of those lucky "bear-sighting people", though...in the 12 years we've lived here, I've only seen one 3 times.

For those of you who were considering moving here and are having second thoughts after reading this, I definitely don't want to scare you away.  First of all, I've never heard anyone say they felt threatened by one.  They're more afraid of us than we are of them!  Secondly, if I can get used to living near them (I've been a city girl my whole life until moving to GA), then anyone can!

I wasn't quick enough to grab my camera for a picture, but here's a photo that was taken by a Skylake resident a couple of years ago.  I think it's funny how he's fluffing out his fur on the top to make himself look bigger.  I doubt that was really necessary since the person taking the picture probably wasn't planning to wrestle him or anything!  If any of you have your own bear story to share, feel free to do so...I know some of you "bear-sighting magnets" probably have some interesting stories to tell!

Hi Sue,
I think you are talking to me...when you are talking about not wanting to scare me away! Bears and snakes do make me nervous but the beauty of the mountains still make me want to move. Wonder how we missed the house "582 Grimes Nose" with the gorgeous layered views? It must not have been up for sale when we were looking. We are still checking out different areas but have found a place in Big Canoe that we are considering. Knowing this will be our last home makes it hard to make a decision. We have found so far, that there is just not the perfect home. Miss our fun day house shopping and laughs with you.
P.S. Can you grill outside without worrying about attracting the bears? That is one thing I love to do!
Joy,
Teresa and Col Bobo

Hi Teresa,
It's really good to hear from you! 582 Grimes Nose is a new listing and it is even better in person. The view is going to be trimmed soon and then it'll be even prettier. I hope you can come see it!
Yes, you can grill outside...I've never heard of a bear crashing a barbeque! Haha!
I would love to see you, so give me a call if you visit the area again. Tell Col Bobo hi for me!
Sue
P.S. I think you need to live in Skylake instead of Big Canoe! :-)

The house has been sold right? If so, how much did it sell for?

If you're talking about the new listing, then no, it's just been on the market for a couple weeks. The other house on Grimes Nose that you liked has been reduced to $449,000! The owner is also considering opening up that view as well...should be beautiful when it's done.
